As the memory of balmy evenings and bright summer mornings have made way for cooler starts and earlier sunsets, we’re excited about the upcoming new season and what it means for our wardrobes – a new Mikko collection!

There are so many trends we’re loving for autumn and winter this year, which made buying from our European artisans such a joy. Whatever your sartorial style, we know there’s going to be something you’ll love from our hand-picked curation.

First to be discussed is the richness and vibrancy of the hues on offer – from divine and sultry shades of plum wine, aubergine and deep bordeaux to bold, head turning maraschino cherry, there’s nothing like a gorgeous pop of a red-toned heel to improve one’s mood and this season it is in abundance. Match with patterned pieces in your wardrobe that bring out those colourways, or make a footwear statement with an otherwise neutral outfit.

Notice the softest of leather finishes in metallics, navy, bronze, taupe and jewel tones – this season there’s a colour to suit all of your needs and then some – take your pick!

Winter tapestry has also been a source for inspiration. Boots and block heels with handcrafted touches, luxurious brocade patterns and flocking detail – great for dressing up denim.

If minimalism is more your vibe, you’ll be pleased to know that utilitarian styles are also in abundance this season. With their clean lines in rich browns and khaki colours, whilst being very on trend now, these hard-working neutrals will still see you through many years to come.

In a modernised nod to 80s glam, high gloss, patent styles are making a comeback, having been spotted on runways and streetstyle blogs the world over. Bring a little polish to your look with our array of options in this durable, impactful finish – a style that’s especially great for a rainy day!

Studs are also back, offering wearable embellishment for both casual and office attire. Seen this winter on ankle boots, brogues, and sneakers alike, they toughen up a feminine outfit and therefore pair well with dresses and floral prints.

The secret to the perfect fit: tips for avoiding foot pain

Many of us lead busy lives and with so much time on our feet, this can sometimes lead to aching feet. However, pain associated with foot conditions, shouldn’t be so uncomfortable that it affects our everyday activities.

If you have a wider foot or suffer from bunions, ask our podiatry trained in-store stylists about brands made especially in a wider width and supple leather. We have an array of chic, flattering and, most importantly, comfortable cuts.

Though we work with heritage family brands, some of whom have been around for generations, they are all invested in modern technology.

Most styles from Spanish brand, Wonders, for example, have a Memory Gel insole. Wonderfully cushioned, they remember their shape rather than compressing down over time. This retains comfort for many years to come, and is particularly ideal for alleviating painful conditions such as neuromas, nerve pain or arthritis.

Winter Style 2018: Key winter fashion colour trends

Whilst we have officially passed New Zealand’s shortest day, we are in the depths of the winter season. That all-day chill is the kind of cold that makes you want to rug up with a cosy knit and a cup of tea until summertime returns! Though early mornings can be a struggle, here at Mikko we’re staying inspired by the rich colour palette of the Winter 2018 season.

Texture and embellishment embody the opulence, elegance and luxuriousness of this season’s collection. Elements of brocade and glamorous adornments make getting ready a treat, whilst plush, soft suede personifies the attitude of the season –drawing influence from the 70s with a bohemian attitude. But above all, a romantic colour palette is the number one drawcard for us this winter. A palette as timeless as it is head-turning. Even better – all of our gorgeous winter styles are now on sale too – and that’s something worth getting out of bed for!

THE WINTER 2018 COLOUR TRENDS

– Winter Berries: Opulent and elegant, this season’s winter berry colour palette compliments the rich tones of the season. A great colour to accessorise with; or wear top-to-toe for a refined and romantic look. Be playful and incorporate with 70’s inspired styling. A wide spectrum of feminine tones; raspberry, wine, cherry and burgundy are represented from refined heels to casual sneakers. Carleen by Arche has been a favourite this winter.

– Enchanted Forest: Wearable yet slightly daring, green shades of forest to jade are enchanting and mysterious. Drawing from the opulence of the season, the colours present beautifully from the rich textures of suede, like Brooklyn by Brenda Zaro, to luminous metallic leather, like Cassie by Arche. Enchanted Forest is a colour that completes any look from corporate to street.

– Pewter Palette: Dazzling and dynamic, pewter is our favourite metallic this season. This winter we are moving away from the casual styling of those gone before, to an elegant revival of dressing up. Pewter is an ideal metallic to wear with black where many of the footwear styles incorporate this go-to shade – like the Naomi by France Mode. For those on the go, Pewter is the perfect day-to-night option.

– Royal Navy: While navy is a colour that we often see as a winter wardrobe staple, it has to be mentioned as a key colour to our romantic 2018 seasonal winter colour palette. This seasons navy comes in varying tones from a dark royal blue, like Atkin by Ara, through to deep midnight shades. Navy is always sophisticated and chic. Wear it with a spectrum of blue hues head-to-toe for a statement look; accessorize with a navy handbag or pair it with this season’s autumn spiced tan or nut shades for complementary contrast.

– Autumn Spices: Drawing from 70’s inspiration this season, timeless earthy mid-tones of eastern spices add depth to your winter style. Rich shades of brown from tan, curry, nut and whisky to paler shades of nougat and toffee spice up your wardrobe this autumn. These rich hues can be worn with varying shades of brown, or amp up your weekend style and wear winter browns with your favourite denim or black capris. Winter boots and shoes: The suede debate

We know as much as anyone that suede can be perceived as a high maintenance purchase in comparison to a smooth leather finish, especially throughout the rainy winter months. In fact, it’s one of the biggest concerns of our customers when they have otherwise fallen in love with the look of a suede shoe.

However, there are many things to love about this sumptuous material!

Suede gives the deepest and most true colour intensity. From rich burgundy, emerald green, navy to classic deep black. Winter’s finest tones are richer, bolder and more beautiful in suede. Jockey by Gabor and Brooklyn by Brenda Zaro are examples of beautiful suede in this season’s colours.

Suede has a luxurious and velvety finish which brings opulence and elegance to your winter outfits, whether dressy or casual.

It is incredibly versatile. With its tactile texture, our European craftsmen and women can apply studs, diamantes, pearls and even glitter to suede in a fashion that will remain secure for seasons to come. See Zakia by Zinda as an example of the detailing that can be added to suede leather.

But what about the rain?

At Mikko we can disprove that it can’t be a rainy day leather and we want to ensure that our customers are as confident with suede as we are.

We trust inherently in waterproofing spray. It truly does work! And whilst we endorse our Wrens care range whole-heartedly, any leather waterproofing spray you have purchased from a reputable brand will do the trick. We recommend spraying all leather products, shoes, handbags, jackets – the lot. We promise you won’t regret it.

The key is in consistency. Simply apply three times prior to wear; spray, dry, spray, dry, spray, dry. It may sound a little tedious, but it’s really quite easy, and so worth it for the amazing result. Following the initial spray; repeat once a month if you wear the item weekly, or every two to three months if you wear it less frequently. Easy!

Like any type of leather, suede is a natural product and will wear, soften and develop personality and integrity as time goes on. Suede, like any leather may develop small ‘character marks’ that simply tell a story of the journey the shoe has taken as part of your well lived life, and when cared for, will only look more beautiful with age.

As we curated this collection, it was top of mind for us to bring you seasonal styles that would not only excite and inspire, but also work back with those wardrobe staples you reach for, year after year.
