5 Top Tips for Optimum Shoe Cupboard Organisation

You know you are a certified shoe lover if you think there is always room for one more pair.  The challenge is where to put them!

If your shoe cupboard is bursting at the seams, it’s worth taking some time to do a spring clean and get organised in time for the next season. In our minds, when it comes to footwear, it is absolutely worth investing in quality, durable designs that deliver on comfort. So, storing your shoes in a way that keeps them looking new year after year AND fits your busy lifestyle is a win / win to us!

We’ve compiled our five top tips on how to optimise your shoe storage.

     1. Categorise.

Firstly, separate shoes by season. It’s likely that a third of your shoes will stored for 6 months (boots vs sandals).

Then, separate those shoes you’ll be wearing now into categories that work best for you. You might find it easiest to style your outfits in the morning by categorising into silhouettes, such as boots, pumps, sandals, sneakers, etcetera. Or, you might have a ‘top five favourites’, or ‘daytime, evening and exercise’ section.

Whatever you go for, having a plan to stick to will help you reach for what you want more easily, and your favourites won’t get lost when getting ready in a rush.

    2. Give them space.

Don’t store shoes on top of one another – it can be easy to do as a quick space-saving idea, but can cause scratches, crushing and warping – not ideal! Look for storage options that enable each pair to be separated from one another, whether that’s a tiered rack system, individual shoes in their boxes (if you have the space), or even re-purposing a bookcase for shoes.

     3. Consider your storage locations.

For shoes you wear most often, open storage that lets damp leather or fabric breathe will keep shoes fresh, without letting dust settle for too long. A wire shoe rack is a good solution as it provides airflow and, being visible will encourage you to keep it tidier. Keep these shoes in a convenient location – this way it is more likely to be used.

For pairs that won’t be used this season, find a space that’s easy enough to get to but not in the immediate vicinity, and pop them in a Mikko Shoe bag or source clear shoes boxes for extra protection before you stow them away. (For more tips on storing seasonal shoes, check out our more in-depth blog post).

    4. Store your boots upright.

When they’re standing upright and looking their best, you’ll be more likely to reach for your beautiful boots when getting ready, as you’ll be reminded about how great they look on. They’ll also take up less space in the wardrobe this way. Boot stuffers are ideal for keeping kinks out of the leather while not in use.

     5. Before you store, clean.

This means wiping away any surface dirt or mud that has accumulated over the day, before it gets a chance to settle in and stain or damage the leather or fabric. For optimal condition, give them a quick once-over with a polish or protector spray. This will help your shoes to last longer, and next time you reach for them, they’ll be looking as good as new, and ready to go!

Sticking to a considered organisation routine may add a couple of extra minutes to your day, but will help you keep your quality Mikko shoes supple and gorgeous, year after year. Quality shoes are precious and worth the extra care. Plus, having an organised storage solution can actually save you time (and money) in the long run!

Happy organising!

How to store your footwear

Shoe care tips for the winter season ahead

With the drop in temperature, many of us will be reaching for our pre-stored winter wardrobes, whilst gradually packing away our open toe styles.

Each brand stocked at Mikko is designed to last the test of time. However, like all things worth cherishing, quality footwear performs best when given the love it deserves. We think it’s important to look after your favourite shoes to ensure they can be enjoyed for seasons to come.

With this in mind, we’ve collated our top tips for bringing life back to winter footwear that may have been in storage, and likewise, how to best hibernate your summer shoes to ensure that come sunshine, they’ll be looking as good as new.

Summer shoe storage:

Firstly, ensure your summer shoes are clean and dry to avoid moulding over time – natural products, such as leather, are particularly prone to this issue.

By giving your shoes a good clean before they’re stored, they will also be much less likely to be affected by mould. We have a number of high quality cleaning and conditioning products such as leather lotion and delicate gel should you be needing them.

Following that, it is ideal to store your footwear in fabric bags to minimise the dust during storage. A number of our brands, such as Arche provide these with each pair purchased. We also have calico bags , which are made in-house here at Mikko, available to purchase here, or provided free with online orders. (Tip – they’re also perfect for travel!).

If you have the room to store shoeboxes, this ensures there is no scuffing from rubbing against other shoes. At Mikko there are always plenty going spare and we love to recycle! If you need a top up during the change of season arrangements, feel free to pop in to any of our stores for a few boxes free of charge!

Once your shoes are all packaged up, it’s best to store them in a dry place, away from a direct light source (whether natural or artificial) to avoid fading.

Winter footwear sprucing:

As for your winter gems, now is the ideal time to protect them from the elements ahead. Give them a dust off and buff to get them ready to wear. Our top tip is that at the beginning of the winter season, all suede and leather should be waterproof sprayed (aside from patent). This will provide the protection they’ll need for the rainy season ahead.

For those long winter boots, make a habit of slipping in some boot fillers each time you take them off to keep their shape throughout the season. We often have a number of great foam fillers on hand in our stores, also available free of charge.

Mikko shoes truly are precious and we want you to enjoy your high quality and beautifully designed shoes for years to come.

Insight into our top 5 shoe brands

Here at Mikko we’re hugely passionate about each of the brands we stock, and that looking fabulous doesn’t need to compromise on comfort. All of our brands create beautiful handcrafted shoes made of soft leather, durable outsoles and cushioned insoles- all of the qualities you look for in your perfect pair. Interested in our top 5 brands and why they are so popular? Read on to know more!

Firstly, it is worth noting that we get consistent interest in wide fitting styles. Kiwi feet do tend to be on the wider side – possibly genetic, and possibly due to so much time in bare feet as children! In addition, as we age our feet naturally spread and many of us may develop bunions, arthritis or other conditions. So, it’s no surprise to us that our most popular brands cater to wide feet.

Ara – a quality German brand, Ara is at the forefront of supreme comfort through clever innovation. For those with a wider foot, Ara offers styles in G (generous fitting) and H (wide fitting), many with removable insoles. Ara uses patented technology to provide optimum comfort, such as Dynergy Soles to reduce impact through the sole of the shoe. Check out our summer styles Adonna and Adron with this special technology and feel the difference.

Gabor – proudly a family of second-generation shoe makers, Gabor is a popular German brand, which also caters to a wider foot. With ergonomic contoured footbeds and cleverly positioned straps, Gabor fuses function and fashion to create gorgeous quality shoes. This season, styles Jamella and James exemplify Gabor comfort – these stylish sandals can be adjusted from the instep, right through to the front of the foot, providing all day support and adjustability.

Arche – a French brand, Arche is the epitome of Parisian style and comfort. Made from all natural components, Arche shoes are designed to outlast fads and trends, as exemplified by styles such as Charlize and Clinton this season. Hand-made with the softest leather uppers that mould to the foot, Arche shoes also have unique soles made of 100% natural Hevea Latex– a dense shock absorbent material that is supportive and durable.

Hispanitas – from Alicante, Spain, Hispanitas proudly hand crafts all of their beautiful shoes and handbags. With an eye for the perfect heel height, they are known for their sophisticated and chic design. Their collection includes evening and event styles through to everyday flats and sneakers.

Rieker – offering comfort, functionality and quality, German brand Rieker combines clever design such as woven panelling (Revive) and elastic gussets, that perfectly shape to the foot. Suited to wide feet or those with bunions, the perforated leather and designer panelling of Rostin and Racey ensures breathability and comfort throughout the warm summer months, whatever your foot shape.

Each brand stocked at Mikko is a family business, just like us, and each one truly embodies our ethos of authenticity, quality, style and comfort.

Meet me in Oxford

Oxford shoes is a term which is associated with British heritage, students in uniform and classy business men. Over the past few years these traditional favourites have evolved into a huge trend. Plenty of fashion’s biggest influencers have traded in their heels for this fashionable footwear staple.

Some may say that it takes a certain kind of woman to pull off Oxford shoes, but the truth is that this trend can work for anyone – it’s all about how they’re styled. The style originated from male inspired roots, yet our European brands prove that this trend is taking on a very feminine persona. Pair your oxfords or loafers with a long-draped skirt for an edgy look, go for a casual feel with a pair of jeans or layer this look with a long trench coat and slim cut trousers – the possibilities are endless. No matter which way you choose to wear Oxford shoes, this season we have ensured that our designer footwear brands provide a look that fits in with your style.

This masculine styling influence is incredibly comfortable with low and mid-height heels to suit every woman’s busy lifestyle. Oxfords give outfits an instant classy charm, and are perfectly well-balanced to create that edgy and preppy look while still maintaining a feminine flair. They also provide the perfect way to transition from summer looks through to your autumn/ winter wardrobe.

This season, we have styles that epitomise the Oxford trend-

BLACK AND WHITE

In a complicated world there is something reassuring about clean and simple black and white. This season black and white prints are arranged in grid patterns, check, spots, flattering chevron and all types of stripes. Black and white is also taken back to basics in chic and understated block colours. The look is modern, cool and assertive.Black and White

GREY MATTER

Grey is the new black this season. From deep anthracite through to stormy mid grey tones, there’s a shade to suit every occasion. Wear grey on grey, or team it up with pops of red or black. Grey is crisp but soft, rich but understated. However you decide to wear it, this minimal look will be classy and chic. Grey Matter

IT’S A MAN’S WORLD

Masculine styling proves good tailoring never goes out of fashion. This season we are shamelessly are borrowing from the men’s closets. Be it feminine interpretations of the pantsuit or a blouse paired with culottes, menswear inspired styles are unapologetically cool and oh-so-femme. In footwear, brogues, loafers, laces ups and tractor soles make the look. It’s all about comfort and fit. Play the androgynous hand and these wearable pieces will be workhorses for many seasons to come.MANS WORLD

HEAVY METALS

Winter’s answer to the summer metallic trend is heavy metal hues in onyx, graphite and dark silver. The real emphasis is on shine. This futuristic finish adds elegance and a touch of glam to any outfit. In footwear, heavy metals work for wearable flats through to sophisticated heels. A great way to make a statement in the new season.HEAVY METALS

OVER THE TAUPE

Taupe is timeless and infinitely wearable. Warm and enveloping, earthy tones add a touch of softness this winter. Drawing from natural hues, this season’s neutral palette has undertones of camel and toffee. There is something rather pure about head-to-toe taupe, or team it with black or darker brown tones for an equally sophisticated look. In shoes, find taupe in casual masculine boots through to wearable feminine heels.OVER THE TAUPE

MIDNIGHT GARDEN

Colour inspiration this winter is richly Neo-Victorian influenced. A bite of romance is in the air, inspired by the world of interiors with deep and moody colours and suede velour textures. Midnight florals, high collars, cinched waists and midi hems allude to melancholy elegance. Burgundy, olive green and navy complement each other this season and create depth and richness. The revival of Belle Epoque brings a touch of old world sophistication to the season.MIDNIGHT GARDEN

SWEET VENOM

Reptile prints have long been a feature in footwear to create depth and interest. This season is no different with winter influences including classic black and white print through to captivating neutrals of taupe and grey. Exotic prints including snake and croc add luxury to black leather boots and shoes. Don’t be without a touch of reptile this season.SWEET VENOM

TASSEL TIME

Tassels are in! Add flounce to your step with tassels or fringe this winter. An ode to the 70’s, this season tassels maintain modern chic. While tassels are bringing back memories of decades gone by, they are not only appearing on shoes and handbags but also on shirts, earrings and necklaces.TASSEL TIME

KICK START

Sneakers, sporty shoes and boots have proven an enduring trend. We are in love with this look that is changing fashion ideals. Sneakers can be worn with dresses, pants and even glammed up for a comfy night out. This season sneakers have really upped their game with prints, patent and fur effect all making a statement. Sneakers and their cool comfort are here to stay.KICK START

COSY DOES IT

Fur and the cosy concept are literally hot off the runway. While we haven’t seen a lot of fur filter through to shoes this season, we love to embrace all that the concept entails. We are gearing up for a snuggly winter with fur and wool lined boots and comfy slippers for around the house.COSY DOES IT
